Meet the riders: Paul Wheller, SLR
Paul Wheller from team sponsor SLR is back to ride Knight Frank Cycle to MIPIM for the fourth time, this time as Ride Captain. He's looking forward to the camaraderie of the event, meeting new people and raise money for our three supported charity projects.
Tell us about yourself and what you’re working on right now:
I am a Director - Transportation Engineering. I'm currently working on the S278/S38 Highway works associated with Chelmsford Garden Community, a new development with Greycoat in Essex.
How did you get involved in Cycle to MIPIM?
This will be my fourth Cycle to MIPIM. My first was back in 2019 when I was volunteered to ride. I love the whole camaraderie of the whole event so have always stuck my hand up if the opportunity arose again since.
How long have you been cycling and how did you get into it?
I’ve always cycled as a kid but got more into road cycling 10-15 years ago when football and other sports took their toll.
What have you most enjoyed about riding previous Cycle to MIPIMs?
It’s always the mix of people you get on the ride, everyone is so friendly and you make life-lasting friendships.
What are you most looking forward to?
Day 5 and 6 when the scenery is stunning and hopefully the weather has warmed up.
What are you dreading?
Day 4 and a 5.30am start on the bike
How are you approaching training?
Just doing as much as I can as often as I can, just trying to get miles in the legs rather than any specific training plan. I’m also trying to join the CP training rides where possible as it’s a great way to catch up with new and old riders.
Any top tips for new riders?
Enjoy it, don’t get hung up on stages, look up and enjoy the company and scenery.
What would you most like to get out of the event?
To meet new people and raise money for three great charities.
What does the fundraising mean to you?
I took part in the 'kit donation' ride from London to Cyclists Fighting Cancer’s headquarters and shop in Stratford-upon-Avon back in November alongside some other Club Peloton riders. It was great to see the work they do firsthand: they are an incredible charity and very inspiring.
What changes does your business expect to see over the next year?
We’re seeing a lot more work in the renewables sector with wind and solar farms and the associated infrastructure for those.
