Meet the riders: Henry Warren-Jones, ME Engineers

Published on March 3, 2025

Henry Warren-Jones from team sponsor ME Engineers is back to ride Knight Frank Cycle to MIPIM again. His experience of riding the event and being a Ride Captain means he understands the benefits of riding with others, the joys of cycling, and quickly becoming friends with those around you.

Tell us about yourself and what you’re working on right now:

I am an Associate Mechanical Engineer in the Building Services sector. Currently, I lead several major sporting venue projects in the UK and Middle East. At ME Engineers, we have a long history of working at Wimbledon Tennis, and I am overseeing a number of projects to further develop the MEP systems on their estate. I have also been working closely with the Club to develop their masterplan Net Zero strategy, which has been an incredible experience. Additionally, I recently led several large-scale residential projects in and around London. It has been fulfilling to see them come to life, and I always enjoy pointing them out to friends and family.

How did you get involved in Cycle to MIPIM?

My Director proposed it at our Christmas party three years ago – I initially thought it was just festive enthusiasm!  But the next day, we were both signed up. Best Christmas present ever!

How long have you been cycling and how did you get into it?

I started cycling about five years ago. A friend dragged me to Decathlon, and I impulsively bought a bike at the same time as him.  Cycling quickly became an escape, a way to deal with some tough times. Now it's an integral part of my life, combining relaxation, fitness, exploration, and meeting great people.

What have you most enjoyed about riding previous Cycle to MIPIMs?

The friendships I’ve made along the way. Cycle to MIPIM is a serious challenge! Sharing that hardship with others really brings you together. And within a matter of days, strangers are your best friends!

What are you most looking forward to?

Making new friends and cycling up big hills!

What are you dreading?

12 hours of relentless rain and headwind at a 'feels like' temperature of -3C…

How are you approaching training?

Last year I spent a lot of time indoors on the turbo trainer, which I found to be quite effective and time efficient. However this year, I’ve been trying to do as much training outside as possible. Nothing prepares you better for Cycle to MIPIM than going out at 6am in the dark, cold and rain, and cycling up some hills.

Any top tips for new riders?

Don't overthink it!  You’ve got a wealth of experience and support around you, so if you have any worries just ask! And even when you're struggling, the camaraderie and conversations will keep you going. The nature of the ride means you’re end up having conversations with so many new people, and you’ll soon find that getting to know people is an excellent way to pass the time.

What would you most like to get out of the event?

To continue to develop my network of like-minded individuals in the Construction Industry. It’s also great that it keeps me cycling over winter, so by the time we get to spring/summer I’m already beating my friends up the hills.

What does the fundraising mean to you?

I'm very passionate about cycling and aware of the joy and freedom it brings. When you're flying down a hill, all your problems suddenly disappear. Bringing this joy to children and families suffering from cancer is something invaluable.

What changes does your business expect to see over the next year?

The Building Services industry is constantly changing. We’re expecting the continued shift towards more Sustainable strategies. Net Zero targets will drive for efficient designs, Smart Buildings, Renewable energy sources, and electrification of heat generation. We also expect the BIM environment to continue to grow, allowing for greater population of information within models, which can be used throughout the construction process and handed over as an asset record.
