Meet the riders: Christine Lowry, Buro Happold
pedElle 2024 takes to the roads of Poland next week. In the lead up to the event, we're speaking to new and returning riders about what they're looking forward to. Christine Lowry is from Buro Happold, a firm of integrated consulting engineers and advisors and a pedElle 2024 partner.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you're working on right now:
I am a Partner at Buro Happold where I have worked for 20+ years as an engineering consultant. I currently lead our UK sustainability team and undertake project work leading our multidisciplinary input into building projects. I love anything with a challenge and have some particularly interesting cultural/historic/sustainable projects on the go at the moment.
How long have you been cycling and how did you get into it?
I wouldn’t call myself a cyclist as such! I love many sports and tend to dabble in all sorts rather than be a specialist in one. I first starting cycling when I wanted to have a go at triathlons, but they turned out to be expensive and hard work… so now I just cycle for fun with friends.
How did you get involved in pedElle?
I have colleagues at Buro Happold who regularly participate in similar cycle events… they said it would be fun!
What are you most looking forward to? And what are you dreading?
I love a good bit of hard exercise in the outdoors – I am really looking forward to experiencing the Polish countryside. Dreading… the weather… Please don’t rain for three days or be too windy!
How are you approaching training?
For the first time ever I have typed out a training plan in Excel… I can’t say I have stuck to it very well as working away from home for at least a few days each week kyboshes lots of my mid-week evening hits.
Any top tips you’ve picked up that you’ll take with you on the ride?
I am all ears for top tips as a newbie to multi-day rides!
What would you most like to get out of the event?
Good healthy fun, some great conversation, and a lasting memory to put 2024 on the timeline for me.
What business connections would you like to make on the event?
Collaborators who share a passion for interesting projects in the built environment.
