Meet the riders: Paul Wheller, SLR
Paul Wheller, Director at team sponsor SLR, is returning to Knight Frank Cycle to MIPIM to take on the charity relay once again. It's people-first for Paul, with the camaraderie of the ride a big draw, along with the potential for good weather along the way (we can but hope!).
How long have you been cycling and how did you get into it?
A long time! I have been riding various bikes since a kid, and I’ve got more in to road cycling in the last 10 years or so. I have also been a coach for the last five years at Preston Park Youth Cycling Club and it’s been great to develop the skills of the new generation of cyclists coming through.
What did you most enjoy about the times you have ridden Cycle to MIPIM previously?
The whole camaraderie of working together as a team and getting to know everyone over the seven days.
What are you most looking forward to this time?
Meeting old friends and making new ones, and a rain- and wind-free northern France (it’s got to happen one year!). Also, I can’t wait to cycle through the Gorges du Verdon again.
Anything you are dreading?
The early mornings, although it’s a lot better now with the later start.
What is so enduring about this relay challenge that makes people come back year on year?
The people, whilst raising money for a number of great charity projects.
Any top tips for new riders?
Slap the chamois cream on, and then slap on some more.
What changes does your business expect to see over the next year?
We have seen a lot more work coming through associated with renewable energy with wind and solar farms.
We wish Paul all the best on his ride to Cannes. You can sponsor him here.
