L&G build bikes with Cyclists Fighting Cancer
Cyclists Fighting Cancer is one of Club Peloton’s four charity projects. They resell donated bikes and kit, using the proceeds to buy new bikes that are given to children with cancer to help them regain their physical fitness, improve their mental wellness and reduce social isolation.
The bikes - many of which come from Trek Bikes - arrive boxed and unbuilt, so when Legal & General enquired about ideas for a team volunteering day, we thought a day building bikes would be the perfect opportunity.
On Thursday 13th October, Mike Grisenthwaite, CEO of Cyclists Fighting Cancer, and some of his team headed to Club Peloton’s offices where a team of 11 were ready to learn how to build bikes. We were joined by Lucy Waller, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist in Oncology from Great Ormond Street Hospital, who explained how the bikes help their children with ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.
Five hours later and a very proud team had built 13 bikes for children of varying ages. The bikes had been chosen specifically for their recipients so each one came pre-allocated with a short story about the beneficiary. It was quite something to know that each bike would be going to help someone’s son or daughter to find freedom on two wheels.
Lushan Sun, private credit research manager at L&G, had this to say, “The team had a fantastic time on Thursday. We found the talks from Mike and Lucy really inspiring. It was great to be able to help the charity build the bikes for the children who would benefit physically and mentally from cycling. Fingers crossed we did a good job but chances are the mechanic had to give every single bike a thorough safety check!”
