PEDELLE 2019 – DAY 2

Jun 21, 2019

It is a slightly earlier start today as we roll out of the hilltop town of Montepulciano. Legs are feeling a little bit tired and there’s a slight air of nervous anticipation for the morning ahead. And it’s another hot one, with temperatures hitting 28ºc by 11am.

The first stage is the biggest of the ride, covering 46km and a mighty 980m of climbing. Riders roll around winding smooth roads, passing wheat fields and more picturesque Tuscan views.

As we reach the biggest climb of the ride, everyone is pushing hard in the heat – and really earning their sponsorship! The climb is steep and the heat relentless, and there is a lot of encouragement and support amongst the group to keep everyone motivated. The first coffee stop offers amazing vistas over the Tuscan countryside and fruit, coffee and snacks fuel the riders into stage two, another long one at 40km, but with less climbing at 480m.

It’s another testing stage, with some interesting road surfaces to contend with (!), and the group splits into two to manage the traffic coming through. The stage finishes with a climb into the stunning medieval hill town of Sorano, overlooking a wooded valley.

After a incredibly long, hot and hilly 86km to lunch, the cyclists enjoy a traditional cheese tagliatelle and profiteroles, before setting off (slighter heavier than before) for the final 30km stage to the finish line in Bolensa.

And of course, what comes up, must come down… After a challenging morning’s cycling, the riders are treated to a number of thrilling descents following a steady 5k climb out of Sorano. Temperatures have peaked but they power through, enjoying the views of Lake Bolsena in the distance, to reach the lakeside hotel finish and enjoy a dip in the lake or pool.

A beautiful yet challenging day two in the bag, and the riders can’t quite believe they’ll be in Rome tomorrow, but the longest and mist challenging day awaits. Don’t forget you can show your support by sponsoring here.
