A short Q&A with some of the riders heading out this March on The Legal & General Cycle to MIPIM, now our 11th edition of the ride!

Name: Barry Fowler
Company: Aviva Investors
Job Title: Managing Director, Real Estate Finance
Bike: Seven Evergreen

Have you done Cycle to MIPIM before? Yes, once – 2013, a.k.a. the “wet one”. I’m really hoping for a dry ride this year, as the dear old French hotel rooms don’t offer much in the way of drying facilities!

If yes, what would you advise other riders to watch out for on the ride? There’s no denying that northern France is just a bit dull and rather repetitive – even worse in the driving rain. But two stages more than make up for this: (1) the night stage riding into Dijon (day 3), with the peripherique closed off, zipping through the red lights under motorcycle escort was amazing; and (2) stage 4 of day 5 and the beautiful views through the Parc Naturel on the long climb up to the windy streets of Bonnieux, followed by a breathtaking descent (don’t attempt to keep up with Christian!).

What are you most looking forward to about the ride? The friendship and camaraderie is excellent. Last time round I joined knowing no-one and made many lasting friendships. As a team sponsor this time round I’m delighted to be introducing four colleagues from Aviva Investors for their inaugural Cycle to MIPIM experience.

Top training tip? Don’t be fooled into thinking that a ride round the flat lanes of Norfolk will be easy, especially in a 45mph gale!

Recommended bit of kit? Having a bike that fits properly has totally transformed my riding experience. I’m 6’7” and last year the guys at Cyclefit help design a frame that does just that. It might not be the prettiest bike in the peloton but I love it and I’m sure there’ll be plenty of people behind me who will appreciate it too!

What does Coram mean to you? Such a great cause helping vulnerable young people. You can’t fail to be moved by the films that highlight Coram’s excellent endeavours and to support over 1.25 million children and young people every year surely underpins all our fundraising efforts.
